How to Choose a Cosmetic Dentist

Choosing your cosmetic dental office is something to take some time with. If you pause for a minute and think about what qualities and assets you would want in your dentist, you will probably have a list pretty quickly.

You might list such things as:

• Experience – you would not want a dentist to be practicing on your teeth and smile. An experienced  dentist will have his learning and practice behind him and will give you skilled care based on practical knowledge as well as theoretical training.
• The best dental materials – any restorations such as fillings and crowns should be done using the best porcelain for long-lasting and attractive results.
• The most up-to-date technology – equipment such as digital X-rays and digital cameras reduce pain, shorten treatment time, increase communication, and give you gratifying Before and After photos for your own records.
• Good communication – you would surely want a dentist who listens to you, who answers your questions clearly, and who takes the time to explain how a procedure could benefit you.

Schedule Some Initial Consultations

When you have a short list of names, from doing online searches and checking out some likely dental websites, or from asking around among your family and friends, contact each dentist. Set up a consultation with each one. When each day comes, bring a list of questions with you and do not be shy about asking them. Briefly note down the answers.

Ask about each dentist’s experience. How many times have they done a smile makeover or replaced teeth using dental implants? If you know what dental work you want, ask about how they would approach it for you. How many years have they had their dental business? Look for a dentist who is enthusiastic about their work, one who perhaps gives television interviews or talks for local audiences (as Dr. Worthington has done).

While you are in each cosmetic dental office, look around at how the staff interacts with each other. Do they seem competent and content? Does the office seem well-organized? Picture yourself coming there every six months or so. Would you feel welcome and comfortable there?

After you have spent some time with several dentists you will probably know which one will suit you best. The best dental results come from a good partnership between dentist and patient. So do follow your chosen dentist’s directions and advice.
