Porcelain Veneers
Westport, Fairfield, Darien and New Canaan, Connecticut
What Problems do Porcelain Veneers Fix?
If you are thinking about how to correct various dental problems and wondering what procedures would do it most easily, porcelain veneers are an excellent possibility to consider.
Porcelain veneers are thin tooth covers that provide new surfaces for teeth. They are entirely customized for your particular dental needs and can correct many problems. One of their great assets is that they are made from modern feldspathic dental porcelain.
What is Dental Porcelain?
Dental porcelain is a type of ceramic with glass-like properties. It comes in many shades of white, the best porcelains having subtle variations in their whiteness. This makes porcelain look very like healthy tooth enamel, which also has subtle color changes within each tooth. Your veneers will use porcelain custom-matched to your natural teeth or designed to change the color altogether.
Porcelain and enamel react to light in similar ways. They both absorb some light and reflect some, which gives them both a pearly sheen. When you have porcelain veneers, or any type of dental restoration that uses porcelain, such as porcelain fillings or porcelain crowns, those restorations will be invisible as restorations. They will blend in beautifully with your natural teeth and only you and Dr. Worthington will know they are there.
Defects Corrected by Porcelain Veneers
Veneers are placed on both front and back teeth. This stands to reason since we are 3 dimensional objects people see us from all angles. If you have any problems with back teeth, you may need a crown or porcelain onlay (a large porcelain filling). Teeth easily corrected by veneers are:
- Small gaps – two veneers can each be made slightly wider than the teeth they are covering, so that they meet and cover the gap.
- Stains or discoloration – if tooth whitening has been ineffective, veneers can be placed to provide new white front surfaces for all affected teeth.
- Slight misalignment – one or more veneers can be made slightly thicker to bring a tooth’s front surface forward, so that all teeth visible in your smile are correctly aligned.
- Slight crookedness – for each crooked front tooth, a veneer can be made a little thicker on the receding tooth side and a little thinner on the protruding side. That gives a straight line, replacing the unevenness of line.
- Mismatched tooth sizes – one or more veneers can be made a little larger so as to match a tooth size with the neighboring sizes.
If you have been living with these sorts of defects in your smile and would like to have them corrected quickly and easily, porcelain veneers are likely the best way to go.
