What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Westport, Fairfield, Darien and New Canaan, Connecticut

There are many dentists across the country who call themselves cosmetic dentists or say that they practice cosmetic dentistry. With such a large number of dentists performing cosmetic procedures, you may find it difficult to determine which of these dentists is most qualified to help you achieve your smile makeover.

The truth is that there is no official cosmetic dentistry specialty. In other words, the American Dental Association has not officially recognized cosmetic dentistry as a specialty, and you cannot receive board certification in the field. Therefore, it is somewhat misleading for any dentist to call him- or herself a cosmetic dentist, since it is not an officially recognized dentistry specialization.

What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

It may be more appropriate to describe cosmetic dentistry as “cosmetic-focused dentistry.” Many of the procedures performed by cosmetic dentists are regularly performed by general dentists as well. However, there is an important difference between how general dentists and cosmetic-focused dentists perform these procedures:

  • General dentists are primarily concerned with achieving results that are functional
  • Cosmetic-focused dentists are equally concerned with achieving both functional and aesthetically pleasing results

In many ways, cosmetic dentistry can be considered a subsection of general dentistry. There is certainly a significant overlap in the procedures performed. As mentioned above, the main difference between the two is the importance placed on achieving aesthetically pleasing results that meet or exceed your cosmetic goals and expectations.

Experience Matters

While most general dentists are qualified to perform your cosmetic dentistry procedure, they may not devote the bulk of their practice to these procedures. On the other hand, most dentists who market themselves as “cosmetic dentists” have made these procedures a main focus of their practice. Furthermore, many of these dentists regularly keep up with the latest advances in cosmetic dentistry and have taken intensive courses devoted to the practice of cosmetic dentistry.

Technology also plays an important role in the success of your cosmetic procedure. Using the best labs, lasers, and other dental technology will dramatically impact the aesthetic appearance of the end product. Dentists who focus on cosmetic procedures regularly use the best labs and the most advanced technology for these procedures. General dentists who do not spend a great deal of time working on cosmetic procedures may choose to invest in advanced technology that will help them achieve first-rate results for other procedures that they more commonly perform.
